Answers before you create your recovery drive.
Will I need to reinstall Windows?
No. PassRescue resets the selected local account password from bootable recovery media, without reinstalling Windows or formatting the Windows drive.
How do I use it if my computer is locked?
Download and install PassRescue on another accessible Windows computer. Create the recovery USB there, then use it to start the locked PC.
Will creating the USB erase its files?
Yes. Back up the USB drive first. Creating bootable recovery media formats the selected USB drive and erases its existing contents.
Does it reset my Microsoft account password?
The workflow shown here is for local Windows accounts. To change an online Microsoft account password, use Microsoft’s official account recovery process.
Can I use a CD or DVD instead?
Yes. Choose CD/DVD on the Create Bootable Media screen and use a compatible writable disc and optical drive.
What should I prepare before starting?
You need an accessible Windows computer, a USB drive or writable CD/DVD, and the locked PC. If its Windows drive is protected by BitLocker, have the recovery key available; PassRescue does not bypass drive encryption.
